Short Stop Solo and Ending ABRSM Grade 1 Jazz Alto Sax

This is a demo performance of a "SOLO" and "HEAD continues" in Short Stop performed at Grade 1 standard I am using A minor pentatonic, rhythms taken from the head and a few of my own ideas. The "HEAD continues" starts as written, then in bars 35 - 36 I play the given rhythm but use notes from the A minor pentatonic. The final phrases starts as written then again, I use use the given rhythm but alter the pitch. #learnsaxophone #exampreparation

Performance analysis designed to help students embellish and improvise within the given material. There are two contrasting performances which are analysed at a grade appropriate level. Some of the background theory is explained, the performances are then shown again with on screen annotation. Related listening suggestions to help the student explore the style are given at the end. There is a three level aproach to each aspect of the piece (the Head the Solo and the Head continues) with explaination and demonstration. This video progresses from simple embelishments through saxophone techniques and background theory to improvisation. There is a full perfromance demonstration near the end. There are many ways to embellish a melody. This arrangement of Bud Powells "Keepin' in the Groove", by Phil Peskett has an improvised ending. 4 bar phrases, 3 improvised and one with the main lick or motif of the piece. It can be tricky to feel as the written material returns on the and of 4 (the 8th quaver or 8th note in the bar) I basically played E minor Pentatonic (which emphasises the b7) but I did also include the Bb (b5) which gave a slightly blues feel in the third phrase #learnsax #examprep #improvisation #grade5

Technique tip: hard playing needs fast tonguing - it is the speed you release you tongue which controls the clarity of sound. Technique: reduce air speed whilst increasing breath support makes for a good diminuendo. Couple this with vibrato and a lovely, spacious affect is achieved This tip would be good for many styles but I was prompted to share having played "Small World" by Martin Speake which is in the ABRSM Grade 5 Jazz Saxophone Syllabus. #GradeV #Grade5 #learnsax
